Christmas, v. 3.2

I checked out a a local newspaper site this afternoon, and read this little tidbit. Stuff like this really upsets me.

I think I pose a pretty interesting question that obviously gets overlooked: What is your reasoning for celebrating Christmas if you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is our Saviour? I mean, isn’t it really that simple?

I don’t get people who complain about the symbolism of Christ and Christanity in public forums, yet there they are essentially celebrating Christmas - but they want to do it in their own fashion. “Hi. I’m going to make this the Giving Counter, because a tree represents Christanity.” What happened to the true meaning behind Christmas, anyway?

There are other reasons to celebrate Christmas. I’m not the least bit religious, but I still celebrate it. Why? Family. Man. People in general. It’s the one time every year (and why people don’t act like this 24/7/365, I have NO idea) when people actually treat each other like equals.

That’s all worth celebrating, with or without deifying a single individual (or a couple individuals) above all others. And let’s face it… Isn’t that the basis of every religion (or so they all claim) anyway? The “true meaning” of Christmas is lost on most people; even the Christians because it isn’t just about Christ. :-)

Oh, and I have no problems whatsoever with proper / classical Christmas definitions, practices, and terms even tho I don’t believe in religion at all. What does that tell you about the twits who do complain?

It was bought out in a hostile takeover by a joint conglomeration between Wal-Mart and Hallmark. After consideration, they closed it and moved the factory to Indonesia.

    Paul,

I find your comment about Christians having lost the true meaning of Christmas, and that it “isn’t all about Christ,” absurd. I don’t even know how to respond, other than that Christmas is Christ’s birthday. And we celebrate because it IS in fact, all about Him.

  4. Paul Says:

It is about his birthday, but there is more to it.

Besides, what or who do you think he died for?

  5. Jenn Says:

    That was Easter.

What sense does it make for you to make religious arguements when you don’t believe it in the first place?

  6. Paul Says:

Because of one reason. I quote you: “What is your reasoning for celebrating Christmas if you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is our Saviour?“.

    That’s why. You asked. :-)

  7. Jenn Says:

    You missed my point. Nevermind.

  8. Paul Says:

I’d say that question was pretty straightforward and not really open to interpretation… However… If I missed your point, what was it?

Technically, Jesus was born in July and technically, he was 3 when they found him in the dessert. (I believe it was Chocolate Mousse.)

There are a lot of holidays this month, Kwanzaa, Chaunukah, X-mas, and some other ones or something that I can’t think of. Most of us see this time as a time for loots and pretty lights and watching a fat pedophile slide on down our chimney to munch our cookies.

Then we say “Santa, are you sure this is right?”

Santa says “Ho ho ho, damn straight little suzie/timmy…” *ziiiip*

In the days of modern PC’ism, we can’t acknowledge one thing without giving a ‘wassup’ to the other things. Not all the kids in the school celebrate X-mas, not everybody celebrates Kwanzaa or Chaunukah. By only acknowledging ‘one’ tradition, it can be argued that you are ‘pushing’ beliefs on people who may not be interested in that. I guess if you’re going to do something for charity, perhaps make a ‘Giving Wall’ or a ‘Giving Basket’ or a ‘Giving Head’ (you know…they can stick mittens on a mannequin head and make it look like a turkey…)

I agree with Paul, that the meaning of X-mas (”…be ye kind to each other and blah blah good will blah blah peace on earth, etc. etc..”) and the true meaning of X-mas (Toddler Jesus hanging out in a manger getting visited by three strange men) are lost on most people. I’m blathering, though.

I generally loathe the holidays and am deeply offended about your holiday post. Stop pushing your fascist holiday cheer on me, man! ;)

    *ahem*

Not to mention that back in the day, the early Christians put Christmas during the Winter Solstice because of the people who still celebrated Nature. They put Jesus’ birthday in December so that the Pagans of the time wouldn’t have to change the celebration part. Same with Easter (Spring Equinox). Bunnies and Eggs are representations of Fertility. Tell me what you think what bunnies and eggs have to do with the Christ Risen?

I could go on and on (how about people still say Yuletide Greetings) but I won’t because I’m freezing my arse off. :)

This is just trying to give people another point of view.. that and I felt I should respond :o

and.. i have a huge problem with christians complaining that people want to call it a “holiday tree” when (quite frankly) there was no decorated pine tree in the manger scene. if these people want to keep christ in christmas so desperately.. have them put a nativity scene on their front yards and shut up about it.

there are many holidays celebrated this time of year. yes, its wonderful to remember that christ was sent to us to save us from our sins.. but we should be remembering that all of the time, not once a year.

better to love and to set an example than to always be up in arms about something. that’s why the church today is dying a slow painful death.

I don’t know. I just think we all need to respect each other’s religions or beliefs. So what if I turn around and see a Jewish person with a menora celebrating Hanukkah. Am I going to start raising cane becauase that’s “Offensive” to me because the religion or belief is being “pushed” on me? That’s so small-minded, weak, and idiotic! I just think if you do not happen to believe in what is going on around you, or what you see/read, then simply turn away, don’t read it, walk off, whatever. Go home and enjoy in your ways of celebration, honor, meditation, faith, what have you. No one “pushes” their beliefs on you unless you let them.

  14. Leslie Says:

Merry Christmas!!! , Happy Winter, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Pretty-Light-Looking, Happy Santa Day, or whatever the hell it is that turns your crank … happy time. Just enjoy it. Let’s not ruin this for everyone else!
